Ready to get your ‘IN’ in the events industry? Here’s how I did it…

A little bit about me…

Hey all, I’m Jenna. I’m an International Events Manager, an American in London, a Dog Mama & an Adventure Seeker spreading all the positive vibes. I’ve been in the UK for 2 years now and in the events industry for 7 years & counting! As you can imagine, being the newbie in a brand new country, let alone the epicentre of the world, can be a bit tough to get your “in”, to find your tribe. Smack on a global pandemic where you’re ‘forbidden’ to engage in any socialisation and it makes you really think twice about what the heck is going on in your life... Ugh.

Myself and everyone else in the world thought 2020 was going to be their year to shine. I had a brand new job at a creative events agency with a title upgrade, I was going to get married and travel to so many exotic places. This was my chance to really get my name out there in the events industry, build my network, establish relationships and produce the coolest events. Jokes on me…

Whatcha going to do about it?

I don't want to bore you with my sob story of 2020, we all were and still are on our own journeys dealing with COVID. I decided in September 2020 that enough was enough. There were only so many courses, webinars, job applications, books, Netflix shows, walks and chats with my dog I could do. I MISSED people, I missed that human connection, I missed interacting. I had few friends and hardly any events-related relationships so I decided to take my life by the reins and do what I do best.

Join a club. Or 2. Or 3…

In October 2020, I joined Juliet Tripp's Event Goal Getters membership group which honestly changed my life for the better. My spark was re-ignited and I started to feel like myself again. My passion for events, life, career, goals, you name it, it was on a whole knew LIT level. I then joined Faye Cornhill’s Wedding Business Club for my secret side hustle, although now you kind of know what it has to do with. In January 2021, I became an Ambassador for the Female Hospitality Network which gave me all the empowering / girl power vibes. It’s refreshing to be a part of these incredible communities where the motivation and encouragement are constantly circulating.

Okay Jenna, relax…

I know, I know, but trust me these groups are life changing. I made a pact to myself to not only COMMIT and INVEST IN MYSELF in 2021 but to get to know everyone in my groups. From January, I’ve talked to (at least) 2 people a week from The Event Goal Getters to get to know them on a more personal level and hear their stories. It has been so much fun; I’m genuinely inspired by all my conversations and the amazing event professionals out there.

Wow. I’ve upgraded from talking on the phone to Zoom calls to make it more of a personal chat. I even have brunch plans with some once the lockdown has eased! The amount of talented, diverse, creative, ambitious #eventprofs out there is truly astonishing. Everyone’s story is completely different, but our passions within the industry are what brings us together. Through them, not only have I gained even more opportunities and had my eyes wide open in awe, but I’ve been connected to others who share a similar story to me or just want to chat too.

These conversations have made me gain more confidence in myself and they’ve helped me remember that I am a damn good socialiser! I genuinely love to build relationships with people whether it’s on a professional, personal or cultural level. You really never know what kind of doors will open for you & the lives you have touched by just extending a friendly gesture… I can’t wait to get to know everyone in all of my groups! I am so grateful for everyone involved taking the time to e-meet with me and read this. It might be a scary ride at first, but the second you push out of your comfort zone, amazing things start happening to you!!
